The Tatoosh Island lighthouse marks the northwesternmost point of the contiguous United States — the tip of Washington's Olympic Peninsula, where the Strait of Juan de Fuca meets the open Pacific. This is the ancestral and sovereign land of the Makah Tribe, and you come here as a guest: a Makah recreation permit is required to be on it. Standing at the end of the trail, my phone buzzed with a message: 'Welcome to Canada.' Vancouver Island is that close. The very edge of the country, lit on fire.
