Reflection Canyon is one of the most remote landscapes in the American Southwest — a labyrinth of horseshoe bends carved into Utah slickrock, eight miles from the nearest road across unmarked ground, and eight miles back. Coleridge's sailor had water everywhere and not a drop to drink; here the problem is not salt but slope. The water below is an arm of Lake Powell, narrow enough here to still read as the drowned river canyon it is, and there is no way down to it — the sandstone rolls over and drops. I edged out onto a small ledge with a camera pack and a tripod, grateful for a new pair of shoes with grip. It would be easy to slide here, and never stop.
